What techniques are available for breast reconstruction?
There are three different techniques that Dr Norris uses for breast reconstruction surgery. Flap reconstruction, which uses tissue from your own body, is generally considered the gold standard procedure because it creates a breast that looks and feels more natural than a breast created using other techniques. There are two types of flap reconstruction, free flap reconstruction and pedicle flap reconstruction. Free flap reconstruction uses tissue from the abdomen that is cut completely free and reattached to blood vessels in the chest. Pedicle flap reconstruction uses tissue that is still attached to the blood vessels in the abdomen or back. The last technique involves using a breast implant alone to create the new breast. Breast implants can be used with a flap technique for enhanced results.
