WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN OCCUR WITH THE LATE EFFECTS OF POLIO?
Many surveys and clinical studies have been conducted into new symptoms experienced by people who previously had polio (11-20). A list of the most commonly reported symptoms follows. • General lack of strength and endurance, such as: • lack of strength during activities; • unaccustomed inability to cope with daily activities; • long-lasting fatigue following physical effort; • exhaustion not necessarily related to activity; • difficulty in recovering from a period of immobility (such as injury, sickness, surgery). Some of these symptoms are obviously related to increased muscle weakness. It is also possible that the feeling of fatigue that some people experience is related to an inflammatory component and, in some cases, lack of sleep and/or poor oxygenation due to inadequate breathing. • Musculoskeletal symptoms, such as: • pain in muscles and/or joints; • increased muscle weakness; • unreliability of previously stable joint(s); • cramps; • muscle twitching; • changes in gait and/or i
