What symbols does the island represent in lord of the flies?
The Island is a metaphor for the World. The whole thing quickly establishes itself as a morality tale with each child portraying a characteristic of the human being. The flies only play a part because a symbol was needed to demonstrate how power corrupts and how people are gullible and fall into line so easily. When the one-legged pirate who was marooned and left his footprint in the sand for JIm to find, it was Blind Pew who recognised his voice as he asked for more gruel.
