What styles did Picasso paint before Cubism?
Picasso’s earliest work, which was realism witrh a slight symbolist influence, doesn’t really fall into a named “period”. The first named period of Picasso’s work came from about 1901, and is known as the Blue Period. From about 1905, he entered his Rose Period, and from 1907 he had his Africa-influenced Period. His Analytical Cubism Period started in around 1909. As the names suggest, the Blue and Rose Periods both indicate a predominant colour in Picasso’s palette. Many of the Blue Period’s works are sombre, in shades of blues, indigos, and bluish greens. Important works during this period include “The Old Guitarist” (1903) and “La Vie” (1903). The Rose Period saw Picasso move into more joyful works, with a brighter palette of pinks and oranges – important Rose Period works include “Garçon à la pipe (Boy with a pipe)” (1905) and ” The Girl with a Goat” (1906).
