What String Instruments Are in an Orchestra?
Orchestral instruments can be broken down into four main sections. Woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings make up the modern orchestra. The string section, usually playing non-stop throughout the piece being performed, is the largest in the orchestra. There are five instruments that make up the string section of most orchestras and each instrument holds a number of chairs. Violins, second violins, violas, cellos, contrabasses and sometimes harps all play particular roles as part of the larger ensemble.
