What streets makeup historical downtown Dublin, Ireland?
The most ancient streets of Dublin are found in the immediate vicinity of Dublin castle. The Record Tower in the present Dublin Castle is part of the Norman castle built in 1228. A map of the city of Dublin (first site below) published in 1610 shows that the oldest part of Dublin stretches from St. Michen’s church and St. Mary’s Abbey, north of Merchants Quay and Wood Quay on the Liffey to St. Patrick’s Church (Cathedral today) on the south of the river. St. Michan’s is on today’s Church Street and houses the organ on which Handel composed The Messiah. Only two rooms of St. Mary’s Abbey remain, it can be found on Meetinghouse Lane, off Capel Street. Dublin’s oldest building, Christchurch Cathedral built in 1030 and restored in 1875 is in Christchurch Place. The crypt underneath the Cathedral is its oldest part, dating from 1172.
