You will need to use all the strategies that you use to solve sudoku, plus some others too. The main extra technique needed is to look through all the boxes and look at the sums. Then work out what possible numbers can be placed in each box in each region. This usually helps you to get started with the puzzle with regard putting in some values. Another technique you can use which is different to sudoku is called the rule of 45. Here you note that each row, column and region must add to 45. This can help you deduce what number must be placed in certain cells depending on the layout of the cells within a region and what they sum to.
