What strategies can bystanders use to make it safer to step in and stand up against bullying?
Dr. Limber: It takes a lot of courage to stand up against an injustice like bullying. However, there are a number of ways that kids can help victims of bullying while minimizing the risk that they might be targeted. If it’s too risky to speak up immediately, kids should report bullying as soon as possible. Many schools have systems in place where kids can leave messages, often anonymously, about bullying that they’ve witnessed or experienced themselves. Kids can be helpful in other subtle ways, too. At a later time, they can tell the victim that the bullying wasn`t right and that nobody deserves to be treated that way. Those words of comfort can go a long way. They can invite a child to sit with them at lunch or recess and be supportive in those ways after the fact.
