What stopped McCarthys witch hunt?
I think there were two major events that led to the end of his crusade. One was the Army-McCarthy hearings. They were conducted by the US Senate, and had to do with McCarthy taking on the Army because the Army had refused to give special treatment to a McCarthy staffer (who had been drafted), G. David Schine. They were broadcast, gavel to gavel. If you google McCarthy army hearings you can find transcripts the hearings. The second was very likely “See It Now”, a CBS program by Edward R. Murrow. It exposed McCarthy’s many inconsistencies and led to a call for the US Senate to censure McCarthy.
