What steps should the U.S. be taking to calm violence and find a long-term solution between Israel and the Palestinians?
We must resist the impulse, however well-intended, to get more involved in this troubled region. Further meddling may well backfire and do nothing to achieve a lasting peace. The Holy Land is full of U.S. tourists, scholars, and students whove been relatively safe from terrorist attacks. As disturbing as it is to watch news broadcasts of Jewish and Palestinian civilians losing their lives, more U.S. meddling will provoke anti-American groups (who see the U.S. not as an honest broker of peace, but as a hated ally of Israeli) into targeting American travelers. To prevent such scenarios, we must demand our government to: –Stop selling weapons to Israel and the Arab states –Discontinue foreign aid programs that provide approximately $3 billion a year to Israel and more than $2 billion to Egypt and other Arab nations –Refrain from placing troops in the region. However, as stated before, if an individual feels strongly about helping defend people in other countries, they should be allowed
