What steps must be undertaken to complete a major road construction project such as road widening or bridge overpass/underpass?
The Engineering & Construction Division is responsible for the management of major road construction projects. This section has a 10 Year Capital Plan with projects they plan to undertake. The projects and timing for implementation have been identified in the City s Transportation and Transit Master Plan. Projects within this plan move through the following stages: • Class Environmental Assessment (EA) must be undertaken to identify the impact of the construction project on the social, cultural and natural environment. The EA can take approximately one year and involve public notification and participation. • Detailed Design Drawings are drafted and include technical specifications for construction projects. The detail design can take up to one year to complete. • Land is purchased for widening the right-of-way. • Construction is tendered to a contractor who will then begin work on the project. • Utility relocations are undertaken as required. • Road construction is completed.
