What steps has the RWA taken to protect the environmental quality of the area?
In 1998 the RWA recruited a team of scientists (Environmental Study Team) to conduct a yearlong study that identified potential environmental impacts from resuming water withdrawals from Lake Whitney and provided a set of recommendations to protect the Mill River and Lake Whitney environments. Subsequently the Upper Lake Whitney Management Study was conducted, a two-year environmental study that focused specifically on upper Lake Whitney (north of Waite Street). With the continued assistance of the Environmental Study Team we are conducting baseline monitoring and have developed a Management Plan to guide the operation of the plant and post-operational environmental monitoring. We hold an annual public meeting every February in Hamden to present updated results and also have an informational web page (Whitneydigs.com) where reports and data are posted on a regular basis.
