What steps do you take to prevent spam from being sent via AddThis?

A message I sent to an external (off-campus) address was bounced as spam, or was filtered and not received by the intended recipient. Why?
Spam being sent to my domain has increased, so the 1-2% of spam that you don identify has increased. Whats going on?

We use a combination of techniques, such as automatic rate limiting based on factors such as who is sending the email, from where, to whom, and message content. We also have the ability to explicitly blacklist based on problematic senders, receivers, and content, if an issue is reported.
