Because the federal safety standards administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally only apply to the original vehicle manufacturer, after-market vehicle add-on equipment used in the transportation of wheelchair-seated drivers is not regulated by these standards. Until recently, this equipment had not been designed to hold up under the forces that are typically generated by the wheelchair and occupant in crash situations, and hadn’t been designed with basic principles of occupant protection in mind.
