The states that participate in Mega Millions are California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. There are some minor rules variations by state. For example, six of the twelve states permit players to purchase tickets by mail. Mega Millions began in 1996 as The Big Game with six states — Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Virginia — participating. The name Mega Millions was adopted in 2002. I was stunned,” she told WBZ. She won a $294 million jackpot. At the store where she bought the ticket, Powers Wine, clerk Jim Lucia remembers it well. “It was a madhouse,” he says. It set off a flurry of ticket sales for the 12-state game. Big banners announcing the w
