Using weighted caseload to assess workload is a “best practice.” Since the mid 1990s, the National Center for State Courts has worked with a wide array of states to develop weighted caseload models, including judicial studies in California, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, and New Hampshire; staffing studies in California, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Oregon; and an assessment of the need for attorneys and staff for the Maryland Office of the Public Defender.
