What state was France in after the French Revolution?
The people were happy to be liberated, but weren’t quite sure as to how to go about establishing a new democracy, as the only people who’d ever done that before were the Americans. Also, they were still very angry at the people who’d been the monarchy before it was overthrown, and they put many of them on trial, and committed acts of absolute cruelty towards them. Marie Antoinette, for instance, was trapped in her home with an angry mob outside who cut off the head of one of her friends, put it atop a pole, and paraded it in front of her window. Later, she was put on trial and her seven year old son was tortured until he was forced to say she had sexually molested him. All the people who did these things were now the ones in charge of somehow trying to establish a new working government. Although democracy is a good thing, the people who fought for it were often as cruel as the tyrants they fought against.
