Although state law enforcement agencies like to self proclaim themselves as the best ones in the nation, no-one can really say — for now anyways — which agency is better. However, some agencies are clearly more prestigious than others based on staffing and the technology they use. The largest state police force in the United States is the California Highway Patrol as of 2008, according to FBI data. The agency has about 9000 officers. Following CHP is the New York State Police with about 4000 troopers. A bigger agency doesn’t necessarily means “better.” However, the New York State Police appears to be one of the top best paying state law enforcement agency to work for (starting salary is about $50,000).
