One family was out of town, according to the Bartow Fire Department report. The kitchen fire started in a downstairs apartment about 6:50 p.m., BFD Lt. Mark Olinger said. Bartow firefighters took their ladder truck and an engine, and when they saw the large column of smoke, immediately requested help from Polk County and Fort Meade fire departments, he said. Mulberry FD came later to assist, as well. Thirty firefighters were on scene. The fire was under control in about two hours, but six apartments in the 8,400-square-foot building were destroyed.
