What started the conflict between israel and palestine over land?
In the late 19th century, a group of European Jews known as Zionists decided to form a Jewish state in Palestine. Palestine at the time was over 95% Muslim and Christian. These Zionists decided they would have to get rid of the Palestinian Arabs in order to make way for the Jewish state. At first they tried buying land. However the native people soon got wind of Zionist intent to take over their land and kick them out and objected, getting the Ottomans then ruled Palestine to restrict Zionist purchase. To make a long story short, some of the Zionists were wealthy and influential and managed to get backing for the plan from Britain. When Palestine fell under British rule after WWI, Britain fully supported the Zionists, helped them set up militias, establish government institutions while forbidding Palestinian development of governing bodies, and brutally repressing Palestinian rebellion against these policies. The British promised that Palestine would be Arab and self-governing in return for assistance in fighting the Turks- which they provided (ever hear of Lawrence of Arabia- those Arabians were really Palestinians- mostly.) Meanwhile they promised to provide a homeland in Palestine for Jews. I must emphasize HOMELAND not STATE example Louisiana is the Cajun HOMELAND but obviously not a self-governing country. Originally Jewish immigrants were satisfied with their little settlements and kibbutz but by the 1920’s Zionists were out to not just make a homeland, but to evict the indigenous population and take the land for their own.
