Font Size: Shrink Font Enlarge Font | The biggest annual sporting event on the South Coast celebrates 30 years on Saturday, when runners again celebrate the memory of Steve Prefontaine. The 30th-annual Prefontaine Memorial Run starts at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Fourth Street and Anderson Avenue in downtown Coos Bay. Runners still can sign up for the 10-kilometer run or 2-mile walk. Race-day registration will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Monica Catholic Church parish hall, located at 357 S. Sixth St. Those who already have signed up can pick up their race packets at the same time. The registration fee is $25 and includes a race T-shirt. Prefontaine set numerous American records during his running career, which started in Coos Bay. He died in a car accident in 1975. The race route follows one of his favorite training runs.
