What spiritual value is there in fasting?
Depriving oneself of many things (not just food) allows one to more easily focus on the basic properties of life, unfettered by attachments to materials. Secondarily, being of want for something for a day or a month makes it easier to empathize with those in need. Fasting is nearly universal among major religions, with Muslims practicing Ramadan, Christians celebrating Lent, Buddhists more or less building their lives around it, etc.
It is a very important question as it concerns all the religious commandments that we are supposed to keep, and in return we get some reward for them. To give you a short and blunt answer there is no spiritual value in fasting at all. Our physical actions do not influence spiritual matters. While all of our world is governed from higher levels, we cannot influence those higher levels simply with our physical actions. If it was that easy all we would need to do is do these actions or pay some money, and we bought our tickets to heaven. These commandment were useful before to teach us morals, ethics, etc., while humanity was not mature or ready enough. But finally now we are ready for the real correction that could elevate the hole of humanity to the spiritual level without fasting, or self punishment of any kind, by following an ancient method that is now available for everyone, of any age, any sex, any religion, or culture.
