For security purposes, to identify and link the carrier electronically to the entry transaction, PAPS, QP/WP and CAFES all require that the carrier possess a valid Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) and assign a unique number in combination with this code. The required identification number is created by identifying the four‑character SCAC, plus adding up to 12 alphanumeric characters for a maximum of 16 total characters.
