What specific gender and diversity mainstreaming issues do you feel organisations like CIVICUS need to pursue?
In practice, mainstreaming gender and diversity within an organisation like CIVICUS requires making these issues alive and explicit in the life and operations of the organisation. They need to be profiled, recognised as cross-cutting issues and integrated into the work, processes, policies and practices of the organisation. At the programme level, it is important to integrate gender equality and diversity in the entire programme cycle – analysis, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, learning, reporting, policy formulation, etc. Among others, GET recommends that organisations that are keen to promote gender and diversity should pay attention to the following areas/issues; • Policies: have policy commitments on gender equality and diversity, e.g. CIVICUS gender equality policy • Recruitment: ensure gender balance within the team which may call for affirmative action in recruitment • Centralised gender unit: have a gender equality team or desk to spearhead gender equality
