What species of fish are likely to be caught?
The main species caught are:- Cod, Ling, Whiting, Pollack, Pouting, Wrasse, and Coalfish although the Pollack and Coalfish are usually small, around 1-2 lbs. Pollack in the summer can be around the 6-8lb mark although fish up to 18 lb have been caught in recent years. Cod are mainly in the 3-10lb range although much larger fish are often caught. A club inshore competition weigh-in, in 2005 saw a 24lb cod brought to the scales. The largest reported cod in 2006 was 20lb and 19lb – 12oz in 2007. Ling are usually in the 3-10lb range on broken ground but can reach in excess of 20lb from the wrecks. Much larger fish are often lost on the wrecks with 20 – 30lb fish a regular occurrence in the summer. Morris Ford took a 20lb – 9oz Ling in September 2006 and 2007 has seen the Club Ling record broken 3 times in as many months, now standing at 32lb with a fish by Neil Hambleton.
