What special facilities are needed for pro se litigants?
Increasingly, people are choosing to represent themselves in court, particularly in child-support and child-custody matters. These individuals, however, require assistance, specifically, information and access to legal materials. Some courts have programs where the local bar provides pro bono legal services or holds office hours in the courthouse where pro se litigants can seek advice on specific legal issues. Many courts have created self-help centers where pro se litigants can use legal references, find information on court procedures and processes, confer with attorneys, and find and complete court forms. The space should be furnished with tables, chairs, a coin-operated photocopier, informational pamphlets and brochures, and basic legal reference materials (statutes and court rules). Public-access computers that can be used to access the court’s information system and other publicly available information may also be included. In addition, space may be provided for a staff person.
