What special adaptations have elephants evolved for means of communication?
Elephants have evolved a variety of unique adaptations for communication including: a very large tympanic membrane which helps them to hear very low frequency sounds, a loosely fitted larynx which together with their trunk makes a large resonating chamber for the production of low frequency sound; densely packed Pacinian corpuscles in the tip of their trunk for sensing vibrations; temporal glands located on each side of the face between the eyes and the ears that often streams chemical secretions to convey different messages to other elephants; a Jacobsen’s organ on the roof of the mouth for reading chemical signals, to name but a few.
