What sounds do wind turbines make?
Wind turbines make a whooshing sound as the blades travel through the air. When standing directly under a wind turbines, you may hear a hum made by the generator and/or gearbox. Manufacturers of large, modern wind turbines expend considerable effort to ensure their machines are as quiet as possible. Through the years of manufacturing and installing turbines, engineers have developed better rotor blade design, particularly in the blade tips and back edges, which is where the sound originates. Aerodynamic noise is a “swish” sound that the rotor blades make. It is important that developers perform careful turbine siting, which in turn regulates the amount of noise produced. As a result of Quabbin Winds deliberate turbine siting, a neighbor is more likely to hear the sound of the wind over the sound made by a single turbine. Wind Turbines sited in the State of Massachusetts have state suggested setbacks from structures and property lines with the intent of meeting all state noise regulatio
