What sorts of maps are available?
Again, this depends on the route that you chose to take. Some areas of the world are better mapped out than others. Some teams prepare their library of maps months in advance of their trip by scouring the internet and local map shops for anything remotely related to their chosen route. Others have been known to write the names of the capital cities along their route in permanent marker up their arm and have found their way by pointing at the next one on the list. The choice really has to be yours. For most teams’ routes a road atlas is fine, but remember it may be woefully inaccurate, especially in its description of “roads”. *Every single map sold of Mongolia is wrong.* This is not a joke. One of the few teams not to get lost had no maps of Mongolia at all! For example the International Travelers Map (the best available in most shops including Stanfords) is comically wrong.
