The following information is intended to give an idea of suitable topics for professional development activities which could be undertaken by the supervising psychologist – they are examples only, and the AOD service is encouraged to identify particular areas of need and consider how best to make use of the specific skills, knowledge and experience of the consultant psychologist. Topics of professional development that have been undertaken include sessions on how to manage difficult and aggressive clients and specific issues in the assessment and treatment of people with comorbid substance use and mental illness. Other topics could include motivational interviewing techniques for working with people with comorbid mental illness and substance use problems, group supervision for staff examining complex clients and working with people with personality disorders and substance use.
