What sort of plays does JUTE Theatre produce?
Since 1994, JUTE Theatre has been committed to producing new contemporary Australian works. What does that mean? “New” means works that have not yet been performed extensively by other theatre companies and 90% of JUTE Theatre’s shows to date have been premier productions of a brand new script. There are some exceptions to this rule obviously, as JUTE Theatre has been known to produce popular Australian works such as Barmaids by Katherine Thompson and Junk Rooms by Stephanie Briarwood, and also JUTE Theatre has remounted some productions for a second JUTE season.”Contemporary” means the form, the interpretation and script itself is relevant to modern audiences. JUTE Theatre would not, for example, consider producing a script that dealt with themes and ideas of the past unless they held some resonance with modern life.JUTE Theatre is also strongly committed to new regional works, and seeks to develop playwrights and plays from regional Australia.
