For most, if not all, careers related to biology and captive husbandry, a four year Bachelor’s of Science degree is the minimum requirement. Of course if you plan to teach or perform more advanced research, you will likely need a master’s degree or even further education. As an undergraduate student though, I would recommend taking courses and programs in biology, zoology, and captive wildlife. Some universites even offer specific courses and extracurricular student organization/societies in herpetology and herpetoculture. Most universities also offer independent research and teaching assistant opportunities. I would highly suggest participating in all of those if your school offers them, as does the UW Stevens Point (where I attended). Furthermore, if you plan to make any career (full or part time) out of keeping, breeding and selling herps, it would be highly beneficial to take several courses in economics, business, and marketing as well.
