What sort of experience do I need to own a wolfdog?
This depends entirely on the wolfdog, since they can vary so widely in temperament and in needs. As a general rule, to adopt higher content wolfdogs (and sometimes even a few lower content ones) from the WRN, prior wolfdog experience is required. Many of our lower content animals, however, can make wonderful pets even for someone with no wolfdog experience at all (we sometimes call them “starter” wolfdogs). Others may require potential adopters to have experience with Alaskan malamutes or Siberian huskies. Still others can be adopted by a person just so long as they have at least some experience with any dog. Extremely shy wolfdogs may require an owner who has experience dealing with unsocialized canines. A wolfdog’s description will usually say if any special experience is required to adopt. If you are unsure, you can always email the wolfdog’s contact and ask.
