Internet Explorer can upload and download files using FTP and for many users it’s all they need. However greater functionality and efficiency is available using a dedicated FTP client such as CuteFTP (for Windows) or Fetch (Mac). Web browsers are not compatable with FTPS so if you want to use secure transfers you need a dedicated FTP client.
