What Social Skills Are Needed for Kindergarten?
When children begin kindergarten, they will meet a diverse group of other kids. In order to be socially successful in kindergarten, children will need to learn and practice certain social skills. Through being social, children will make friends and it will help them learn the material being taught in class. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions Children should learn that they should never be afraid to ask questions. This kindergarten social skill may not be present on the first day of school, but children should develop it throughout the school year. Once they make some friends they are likely to be less shy when it comes to asking questions. When at home, encourage your child to ask questions when he or she is unsure of something. Getting Over Separation Anxiety Many children, particularly those who did not attend preschool or daycare, will experience separation anxiety. They are so used to being with a parent that spending time away from them with strangers can result in fear and anxiety.
