What smells like rotten eggs?
The rotten egg smell can be caused by a couple different things. First of all, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur, smells of rotten eggs. This is most common in well water. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic, noxious, and poisonous gas that should be taken very seriously. A simple test by a water expert can determine the extent of sulfur in your water. Sulfate reducing bacteria can also cause the rotten egg smell. When the bacteria builds up in your water heater, it dies and decomposed creating hydrogen sulfide. If you only smell rotten eggs when the hot water is running, and not the cold, you most likely have the second form of sulfur.
