What skills should a high school student work on if he/she wants to become an Architect?
A question near and dear to my heart ….and pocketbook. High School – Study design in other countries and go there if possible. Sketching and arts, yes. Get some business practice. Work a summer or 2 in an architect’s office to see what happens in reality. They will love to show the student around. In high school, don’t worry about building codes but later develop a good and non-confrontational relationship with the plans review department “downtown”. The will be lots of help if you have a good relationship. The original definition of architect is Master Builder. So get to know some builders and spend some time on building projects. Get yourself a hardhat to show the contractor you are serious. Start with residences and start when the foundations are dug in the ground. yo will be respected if you show this interest early and will quickly earn respect with all contractors – it is they who can make or break the project and your bank account . Architecture = Lots of glamor, not so much m
