I am a Director of an early childhood program. I find the most important skills lie in the areas of patience, being fair but firm, appropriatness, and nurturing. Many teachers can teach but it takes a special person to capture your audience and have them all learn. Many of the skills are not taught in Universities they are life skills. You have to know how to respond to behaviors in ways that are positive and promote positive behavior in the children. Problem solving is another important skill. Positivity – the ability to walk into the classroom every day with a smile and a generosity of spirit towards all the kids, aides, secretaries, administrators, staff, etc. One of the best parts of your job is the ability to make every day a wonderful day for everyone you meet. 2.
