At eight, she could enter a growth spurt that would keep her off anything as small as a Shetland, so if you want a pony, I’d look at Welsh, which have nice dispositions, or Connemaras, which are the best jumping ponies anywhere, and they also have pretty nice temperaments…you rarely see “small man syndrome” with them. I always rode Quarter Horses….if you avoid getting one with too much Thoroughbred in him, that should do the trick. Suitability of horse to rider is more important than the breed. Just make sure you have your OWN vet (a vet certificate from the seller’s vet isn’t worth the paper it’s written on), try it out thoroughly (ask if you can keep it at your place, or a neutral place for a few days, so whatever they gave it to calm it down before you ride it will have a chance to wear off), and if you have a friend who knows more about horses than you do, take ’em along…..four eyes are better than two.
