What size is the Schnauzer dog breed?
The Schnauzer comes in three sizes, large, standard and miniature, and is of the Terrier family. Curiously, perhaps, the breed has never been known as the Schnauzer Terrier though it is plainly of that type and squarely built like all Terriers. As the name suggests, the Schnauzer is of Teutonic origin, being used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as a cattle herder, watch dog, police dog and companion. The larger sized Schnauzer is rarely seen in the UK, but the standard and miniature are well established, with many devotees. As a breed, it was first introduced into this country as recently as the 1950s by the Duchess of Montrose who was very much a UK pioneer for the Schnauzer. It would appear that the ‘typical’ Schnauzer is the standard size. Certainly, the statute of The Nightwatchman and his Dog in Stuttgart, dated to 1620, portrays the medium sized Schnauzer. Paintings from the 1500s also depict the Schnauzer as a well defined medium-sized dog breed.
