What size eartips should I be using on what age group?
All ears are different and eartip sizes will vary greatly from patient to patient. As a general rule, eartip size will grow with age, but there are small children with adult size ear canal openings, and grown adults with pediatric size ear canals! The eartip must seal the ear canal completely. Although sometimes OAEs can be obtained with a less than optimal seal, test reliability can be compromised if the eartip is too small. A snug fit is especially important for tympanometry testing, where the test cannot be completed if there is an air leak. Observe the ear canal opening and select the ear tip size that appears just larger than the size of the ear canal. If choosing between two sizes, opt for the larger.
