What size does an aorta aneurysm need to be to be operated on?
Traditionally, aortic aneurysms are operated on when they reach 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter or greater. We know from the natural history of the disease that rupture becomes a possibility at that point. Repair results in removing this risk. Aneurysms in the chest, especially at the origin of the aorta, have other problems associated with them and may require surgical repair earlier.
