What similarities do you see between contemporary American society & culture and the decline of the Roman empire?
I am no historian, but when I think of the decline of the Roman Empire, I think of those who sought power and material advantages rather than the preservation of the human race and care for those in need. American news so often speaks of the type of political power that says “we” are better than “they” (no matter whom “they” are. There have been so many news articles on hedge funds and big money, and there have been so many sub prime mortgages offered to those who were almost predetermined to default, that I really see lots of greed. Even today, the news spoke of the extravagant parties held by Congress, partly to gain votes, and partly just for the sake of a ‘good old time’. All these things remind me of the tone at the time of the decline of the Roman empire. However, this is not to say that we live in a country with no philanthropy (think of Bill Gates, Bill Clinton and their help for the underprivileged of the world).
