The Battle of Bunker Hill EARLY on Friday evening, June 16, 1775, rebel military leaders held an urgent meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Intelligence had just reached them that redcoats under Lieutenant General Thomas Gage would soon attempt to break out of Boston. The British plan was to cross the body of water south of Boston, take Dorchester Heights, then sweep north through Cambridge, the patriot army command base, and send the rebels, now numbering well over 10,000 volunteers, back into the countryside. The target date for this operation was Sunday, June 18. The assembled rebel officers decided to divert the British from their plans by moving patriot lines closer to Boston. They gave orders to Colonel William Prescott to fortify Bunker Hill on Charlestown peninsula, just to the north of Boston.
