The MAOIs are rarely used nowadays because you need to be on a special diet in order to take them. The TCAs can cause dry mouth, constipation, weight gain, tiredness, urinary difficulty, and light- headedness upon standing. Also, they can be dangerous if you have a heart condition. The newer generation of medicines can cause mild nausea or heartburn, excessive sweating, restlessness, insomnia, weight gain, tiredness, and sexual problems. This is just a brief list of the more common side effects that can be caused. Other side effects may also occur, and the likelihood of particular side effects differs with the different medicines. It is important to tell your doctor what you are experiencing and ask whether it might be a side effect. Of note, many patients do not experience any side effects.
