Reflecting an eclectic Broadway season, the 62nd Annual Tony Awards crowned a salsa-flavored musical written by a theater novice, a nostalgic glamorous revival, a sweeping melodrama from a writer making his Broadway debut, and the revival of a ’60s sex farce. For best musical, the top award of the night went to “In the Heights,” a show about Latino families in way uptown Manhattan created by 28-year-old Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is not only making his Broadway debut but his professional theater debut with this show as well. The show also won awards for score, orchestrations and choreography. The talented James Earl Jones is set to drive Miss Daisy into Broadway this fall. The renowned actor is headed back to Broadway in the upcoming production of Driving Miss Daisy, which will also star Vanessa Redgrave and is slated for a fall 2010 entrance onto the stage at the John Golden Theatre. Driving Miss Daisy will begin performances at the John Golden starting Oct. 7, 2010, with an opening date on Oct. 25. The Pulitzer Prize-winning production about a widow and her chauffeur in Atlanta will be directed by David Esbjornson and led by producers Jed Bernstein and Adam Zotovich. Driving Miss Daisy is already a very popular production even before its Broadway debut, as the play was originally brought to life off-Broadway and was adapted into a feature film in 1989 starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd. No further casting has yet been announced for the upcoming presentation of Driving Miss Daisy on Broadway, though with lead actors James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave
