What should you expect with treatment for lymphedema at St. Francis Physical Therapy?
The goals of treatment are to reduce the size of the involved area and to teach patients and their families how to maintain the reduced size with the use of long-term compressive devices. Lymphedema treatment is provided by a trained physical therapist or physical therapy assistant, and it consists of: • Lymph drainage massage. • Exercise. • Special medical compression bandaging. • Education to help prevent further occurrences. • Assistance with obtaining compression garments. • Assistance with obtaining compression pumps. The massage, exercise and compression bandaging aids the lymphatic system by moving the fluid towards areas with healthy lymphatics and preventing the fluid from returning to the involved area. How to get started If your physician has given you a referral for lymphedema treatment, call St. Francis Physical Therapy at (317) 783-8111 to schedule an appointment.
