The first airline to implement the charge is American Airlines, who will add the $10 fee on flights on the Sunday following Thanksgiving and for the weekend of January 2 and 3, when many travellers will be returning home from Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Delta and United Airlines have both announced that they would impose a similar surcharge. However, JetBlue, Continental, Southwest, Alaska Airlines and AirTran have not yet announced that they will match the $10 charge on their tickets. With Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching there are several things students should know before purchasing a ticket home. First, be sure to look at your schedule before buying a ticket. Most, if not all, of the professors on campus WILL NOT allow you to do your final early and only some offer make up finals. Look at when you have tests or finals before purchasing a ticket. When purchasing a ticket, shop around. Many places such as expedia.com offer better prices than going directly to the airline or even a travel planner. When choosing a ticket, try and find non-stop flights either early in the morning or late at night to avoid delays and crowds. If a non-stop flight is not available, then make sure you leave at least one hour between connecting flights to allow for delays.
