What should someone expect of a good eye examination?
A good eye examination should be performed by a licensed Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. Before the doctor starts testing it is important that you are able to have a conversation about your eyes, what visual demands you have at work and play, and what history your eyes have as well as blood relatives eye history. The examination should not only involve updating your glasses and contact lens prescription, but include a detailed eye health examination. The doctor should be testing your eyes for sight threatening diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration as well as looking for signs of diseases of the body, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers and high cholesterol. Technologies such as visual field testing and retinal digital imaging are useful tools in detecting eye disease early and are certainly a benefit to preventing vision loss.
