What should parents know about caring for a child with neutropenia?
If your child has developed signs of an infection (such as a fever, aches, chills, nausea, or vomiting), s/he should be seen by a physician evaluated and treated with antibiotics to fight a serious bacterial infection. Localized infections, such as infected wounds that produce pain, redness, pus, or swelling, also should be treated with antibiotics. Fevers can be very serious for children with neutropenia. If your child has a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit, always call your physician.
